Got a Mobile Marketing Campaign? Don’t Forget This!

08.16.10

I was out with my friend the other day walking around downtown Chicago, when I saw a very intriguing sign on a bus that said Salt Must Die.  Obviously this was before I had heard of the movie Salt starring Angelina Jolie.  It was a very vague sign, and then I saw several more of these signs.  After being barraged by the signs while driving in the car, walking down the street, or riding on the train, I finally gave in, grabbed my cell phone, and went to their website address (as I would since I was “mobile” all of the times that I saw the billboards and signs.)

What I saw when I got the website was a black screen with the Flash Player Missing icon that you will of course see if you are trying to view a website in flash.  They lost me, and I never went back to the site.  What they should have done was have a way to detect that I was using a mobile device, and redirect me to a page where I would be asked to sign up to use this awesome game that they really wanted me to play, and then invite me back to play it on my computer when I got home.

Moral of the story: if you are utilizing advertising where the majority of the people who are going to see it are mobile, then design your websites for use on those kinds of devices.
